Often known as The Blackie the Black Horse has a real homely feel to it with the lovely wood burning fire often a feature in the winter. The summer garden offers the chance to enjoy good food & drink in the garden whilst catching some rays. This can also be extended to the evening with our outdoor heaters. With four live screens you can also catch all the up to date sport action any time of day.

T
he sometimes, much favored haunt of the university student fraternity is one of the oldest public houses in Exeter.  The pub was established in the early 18th century as a coaching inn on the main route from Tiverton to the city - this was before the alternate route via Cowley along the Exe Valley was established.  With previous locals including J K Rowling & Will Young who knows what famous faces you will see in the bar!

The Black Horse Inn used to be much frequented by actors from the Theatre Royal, until it closed in 1962 - the theatre was just a few yards up Longbrook Street. The area around the Black Horse was the centre of early motoring in the late 19th and early 20th century in Exeter. A possible regular in the inn would have been William Shepherd, who ran an automobile workshop in Longbrook Terrace in the 1890's. He also owned the garage at the top of Longbrook Street which had Exeter's first petrol pump - the premises, below the Strikers Cafe Bar are still used as a tyre fitters.
